WEEK 3 INJURY FALLOUT: THE FANTASY LANDSCAPE JUST CHANGED

Week 3 wasn’t just about breakout performances and disappointing box scores.

It may have changed several fantasy backfields, receiving rooms and even a starting quarterback situation heading into Week 4.

De’Von Achane, Breece Hall, Justin Jefferson, Mike Evans and Baker Mayfield were among the biggest fantasy names to leave Sunday’s games injured. Puka Nacua didn’t even make it onto the field Sunday night.

And with several players headed for additional testing, this is a week where fantasy managers need to pay attention before making waiver claims.

Here are the situations we’re watching most closely.

🚨 DE’VON ACHANE — KNEE

This may be the biggest injury coming out of Week 3.

Achane injured his knee during the first quarter against Kansas City and was eventually ruled out. He finished with just 3 carries for 17 yards before leaving.

The concerning part came after the game.

Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said the initial outlook “does not sound very optimistic,” while stopping short of giving a diagnosis.

That makes Monday’s medical testing extremely important.

FANTASY FALLOUT

Ollie Gordon immediately becomes one of the biggest names to watch.

After Achane left, Gordon handled the lead role and finished with 17 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown.

If Achane misses time, Gordon could go from bench stash to a legitimate weekly fantasy option almost overnight.

WATCH: Achane’s testing and Miami’s practice reports.

🚨 BREECE HALL — THIGH

Another starting fantasy running back went down Sunday.

Hall suffered a thigh injury during the fourth quarter against Detroit and was quickly ruled out.

He finished with 13 carries for 32 yards while adding 3 catches for 23 yards.

Hall said afterward that he initially felt something while running and then felt something again after planting while being tackled.

An MRI is expected.

FANTASY FALLOUT

Braelon Allen becomes an immediate waiver-wire watch.

Allen took over after Hall exited. The production wasn’t huge Sunday, but the potential workload is what matters.

If Hall can’t play Week 4, Allen could suddenly have one of the largest role increases of any running back in fantasy.

This is exactly the type of situation where opportunity can matter more than what the previous box score says.

🚨 JUSTIN JEFFERSON — ANKLE

One of fantasy football’s biggest stars couldn’t finish Week 3.

Jefferson injured his left ankle during the first quarter against Tampa Bay and did not return.

He finished with 2 receptions for 32 yards.

There was at least one somewhat encouraging sign: Minnesota coach Kevin O’Connell indicated Jefferson got close to returning before the Vikings ultimately kept him out.

But with Jefferson, fantasy managers aren’t going to feel comfortable until we see the follow-up evaluation and practice participation.

FANTASY FALLOUT

If Jefferson misses time, Minnesota’s remaining pass catchers immediately become more interesting simply because of the enormous target share that would become available.

But don’t assume Jefferson is out yet.

This is a monitor-the-practice-report situation.

🚨 BAKER MAYFIELD — DISLOCATED RIGHT THUMB

This one could affect an entire offense.

Mayfield suffered a dislocated right thumb on his throwing hand late against Minnesota.

The good news: initial X-rays showed no fracture.

The bad news: a dislocated thumb on a quarterback’s throwing hand obviously creates major questions about his ability to grip and throw the football.

Mayfield was scheduled for an MRI Monday.

Before leaving, he completed 17 of 34 passes for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

FANTASY FALLOUT

Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels is currently the next quarterback up.

Daniels entered late Sunday and went 0-for-3 with an interception, although the situation was hardly ideal—he was thrown into the game cold with Tampa Bay desperately trying to tie it.

If Mayfield misses Week 4, Daniels would be in line for a massive jump in responsibility.

And this isn’t only a QB issue.

Every Tampa Bay pass catcher would need to be reevaluated if the offense goes from Mayfield to an inexperienced rookie quarterback.

This is one of the week’s most important situations to monitor.

🚨 MIKE EVANS — RIBS

Mike Evans entered Sunday already dealing with a hip injury.

Now there’s another issue.

Evans left San Francisco’s win over Arizona after taking a hard hit and was unable to return. The injury has been reported as a rib strain.

For fantasy managers, the combination is what concerns us.

Hip injury entering Week 3 + rib injury during Week 3.

Even if Evans avoids a long absence, his practice participation this week becomes extremely important.

FANTASY FALLOUT

Any missed time would redistribute targets throughout San Francisco’s passing game.

And with the 49ers already dealing with injuries elsewhere on the roster, this becomes another situation where the next man up could quickly become fantasy relevant.

🚨 PUKA NACUA — GROIN/HIP

Unlike the others on this list, Puka didn’t suffer his injury during Sunday’s game.

He never played.

Nacua was ruled out of Sunday night’s matchup against Denver because of the groin/hip issue that bothered him throughout the week.

Reports indicated the injury was affecting his explosiveness, and Los Angeles ultimately chose not to risk him.

There has also been reporting that the Rams don’t currently believe surgery will be necessary, although his recovery remains something to monitor.

FANTASY FALLOUT

Until Puka returns, the Rams’ target distribution changes significantly.

And unlike an in-game injury where we are waiting to discover the severity, we already know this problem was significant enough to keep him out of Week 3.

His ability—or inability—to practice this week should tell us much more about Week 4.

🚨 TRAVIS ETIENNE — LEFT WEEK 3

Etienne was another fantasy-relevant running back unable to finish Sunday’s action.

He exited New Orleans’ game against Las Vegas and did not return.

The exact severity and timetable still need clarification, which makes this another backfield fantasy managers should monitor closely over the next several days.

FANTASY FALLOUT

Whenever a starting running back leaves a game and can’t return, the backup touches immediately matter.

Don’t automatically chase the replacement before we know Etienne’s status—but this is absolutely a depth chart worth watching before waivers run.

👀 GARRETT WILSON — GOOD NEWS AFTER A SCARE

Not every injury Sunday ended badly.

Wilson needed medical attention following a late hit against Detroit and was evaluated for a concussion.

He was cleared.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn said afterward that Wilson should be fine.

For now, this looks much less concerning than the Breece Hall situation in the same offense.

THE BIGGEST FANTASY QUESTIONS HEADING INTO WEEK 4

Week 3 gave us several situations that could reshape fantasy lineups immediately.

Is Achane going to miss significant time?

If he does, Ollie Gordon becomes extremely interesting.

How serious is Breece Hall’s thigh injury?

If Hall sits, Braelon Allen could suddenly inherit a major workload.

Can Justin Jefferson get back on the field quickly?

Minnesota’s entire target distribution depends on that answer.

Can Baker Mayfield throw with a dislocated thumb?

If not, Tampa Bay could be turning its offense over to an undrafted rookie.

And then there are Mike Evans, Puka Nacua and Travis Etienne, all of whom could create additional fantasy opportunities if they’re unable to play.

We’re only three weeks into the season, and once again the fantasy landscape is moving quickly.

The waiver wire matters this week—but the injury reports may matter even more.
