Draft season gave us projections. Training camp gave us clues. Injuries changed backfields. Depth charts shifted. And now we’re finally about to get the only information that really matters:

What happens when the games count.

Running back might be the position where being ahead of the market matters most.

Roles can change overnight. A committee can suddenly produce a workhorse. One injury can completely reshape a backfield. And sometimes the player everyone drafted in August isn’t the player we want in September.

These are not weekly start/sit rankings. This is our overall fantasy running back board — how we value the position entering the 2026 season based on talent, opportunity, receiving upside, workload, health and where we believe each back is headed next.

And just like our quarterback rankings, this board will move when the NFL gives us a reason to move it.

FIVE RANKINGS WORTH TALKING ABOUT

KENNETH WALKER III — RB6

We’ve been higher on Walker than the market for a while, and we’re not backing off now.

The talent has never really been the question. Walker has the combination we want in a fantasy back: explosiveness, tackle-breaking ability and the ability to turn one crease into a play that changes your week.

Now he gets a fresh start in Kansas City, where the quality of the offense gives him something he didn’t consistently have before — an opportunity to pair his talent with a potentially elite scoring environment.

There are backs below him who may feel safer.

We’re chasing the ceiling.

The Beyond the ADP call: Walker isn’t just an RB1 for us. He’s knocking on the door of the elite tier.

JEREMIYAH LOVE — RB13

This might be one of our most aggressive rankings.

And we’re comfortable with it.

Love enters the NFL with the kind of talent that can make preseason rankings obsolete very quickly. The rookie label will scare some fantasy managers away, and there are legitimate questions about how quickly everything comes together.

But eventually talent wins.

We’d rather be a little early on a potentially difference-making running back than spend September trying to acquire him after the breakout happens.

There is risk here.

There’s also enormous upside.

The Beyond the ADP call: We’re willing to bet on the talent before everyone feels comfortable doing it.

TRAVIS ETIENNE JR. — RB14

Sometimes fantasy managers move on from a player before they should.

Etienne feels like one of those cases.

The excitement surrounding his name isn’t what it once was, which is exactly why we’re interested. He’s still capable of producing as both a runner and receiver, and he doesn’t need to be treated like a 25-touch workhorse to return strong fantasy value.

At RB14, we’re betting that the fantasy community has become a little too comfortable pushing him down the board.

The name may not feel new anymore.

The production still counts the same.

The Beyond the ADP call: Don’t confuse being tired of a player with that player being finished. ETN still has RB1 upside.

JADARIAN PRICE — RB18

Here’s where we’re really planting a flag.

Price at RB18 is well ahead of where you’ll find him on many other boards.

That’s intentional.

Opportunity is everything at running back, and Seattle’s backfield has opened the door for Price to become much more relevant than his original draft cost suggested.

Now he has to prove he can handle it.

We’re not ranking him 18 because of what he’s already accomplished. We’re ranking him there because of what we believe the combination of talent and opportunity could become.

If we’re right, the window to acquire him cheaply won’t stay open very long.

The Beyond the ADP call: Price is one of our biggest risers and one of the players we’re most excited to watch immediately.

TREVEYON HENDERSON — RB28

This is the other side of ranking aggressively.

Sometimes you have to move a player down.

Henderson has plenty of talent, and we’re not abandoning him long term. But the ankle issue has lingered long enough that New England has already ruled him out of the opener.

That’s meaningful.

Early-season injuries at running back can create uncertainty with workload, conditioning and how quickly a player gets his full role back.

Could Henderson eventually climb right back into our Top 20?

Absolutely.

But we’re not ranking the player we hope to see a month from now. We’re ranking the situation that exists today.

The Beyond the ADP call: RB28 isn’t a verdict on Henderson’s talent. It’s the price of uncertainty — for now.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Running back is where fantasy leagues can change fast.

At the top, Gibbs and Bijan give us the combination of youth, talent, workload and receiving ability we’re willing to build around.

McCaffrey, Taylor and Achane round out an elite five.

Then things get interesting.

We’re higher on Kenneth Walker than many. We’re willing to take the upside swing on Jeremiyah Love. We believe Travis Etienne has been pushed down too far. And we’re putting Jadarian Price at RB18 before the market fully tells us it’s safe to do it.

We’re also willing to react when circumstances change.

That’s why Henderson has fallen to 28.

It’s why Josh Jacobs isn’t currently on this board at all while his availability remains unresolved.

And it’s why these rankings won’t sit untouched simply because we published them before Week 1.

Because at running back, today’s RB30 can become next week’s must-start player faster than at almost any other position.

Don’t draft the name.
Don’t be afraid to move early.
